Hannah designs fun and colorful accessories with her sister for their brand, The August Sisters. Here she shares about how her Enneagram type shaped her personal style, her signature color, and marching to the beat of her own drum.
Hi my name is Hannah Waggoner and I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee with my family and rescue pup Mocha. My family means the world to me. We are all so close which is such a blessing! I have an older brother named Josh and a younger sister named Sara-Anne. I’m the middle child. I am an Enneagram 4 ‘The Individualist’ and INFJ. My role models are the Green Lady of Brooklyn and of course Dolly Parton. I come from a small town (Ringgold, Georgia) so that’s what I love about Dolly so much.
Fun fact: Dolly actually got married in the Ringgold Wedding Chapel and I’m always hoping I’ll run into her when she visits with her husband for the anniversary.
On Working With her Sister
I’m a huge advocate of following after your dreams and doing what makes you happy. I own my own company with my sister Sara-Anne called The August Sisters. We hand-make fun & colorful statement earrings. We are also working on our clothing brand which is so exciting! We both are designers and it is so much fun getting to work alongside my sister. She is one of my biggest inspirations and I admire her so much. She does all the photography and set design for our company. And I do all the marketing, Eccomerce and social media management. Our goal is to create a brand that not only sells unique products but brings people together to celebrate our differences. Our customers are so creative and they inspire us so much.
On Personal Style
I’m a small-town girl. I grew up in Ringgold, Georgia but I currently live in Chattanooga, Tennesse. They are only about 30 minutes away from each other. So normally I tell people I’m from Chattanooga because it’s just so close and people tend to know more about it than O’ Ringgold. I went to a private high school in Chattanooga so I grew up having to wear school uniforms. Wearing school uniforms has definitely played a role in who I am today. Being an Enneagram 4, I don’t like to look like everyone else so I accessorized like crazy. And I was always looking for the most unique shoes/boots to wear with my uniform. I had to stand out somehow.
On the Joy of Creativity
My mom always taught me to beat to my own drums and not to be afraid of being my own person. She has played a huge role in influencing me to tap into my creativity. My whole family is creative though. Creativity definitely comes from a long line of creative women in my family. My great-grandmother, Opal Genita, taught me how to sew when I was little. My grandmother and mother are both creative as well. My mom is so amazing with interior design and staging. She has recently been working with wood and creating these incredible set designs with my sister. She’s the coolest! I’m very blessed to be able to say that my creativity has always just been there. I was born into it. My parents gave me and my siblings space to just be and create the life we wanted to have. I feel so lucky to be able to create and get lost in what I’m designing. It is so therapeutic for me. Being outside and just looking at the small things in life inspire me the most. I’m a noticer. I’m also really obsessed with shadows and reflections. Every time I see them I feel inspired.
On a Signature Color
I’ve been really loving Depop lately and shopping on eBay. I love finding more unique pieces on there. I love adding color especially greens to my wardrobe. Green makes me so happy. Hence why I love the Green Lady of Brooklyn so much. People around town now know I love green so much that they have started sending me pictures of green clothing or items they think I would like. On my Instagram account, I started this thing where I say; “If I were (insert something that is green), I’d be this one.”
For example, one time I saw a lime green porta potty so I took a picture of it to share in my story. I said; “If I were a porta potty, I’d be this one.”
Now it has become a thing I do. Every time I see something random that is green I post about it.
On Favorite Accessories
Well, I’m going to be a little bias but my favorite accessories are the ones my sister and I design. Our earrings are totally us! Every day I have different ones to wear with my outfits. My favorite earrings right now are the green Blitz, Fallon, Florence in black and/or green, and the Rainn earrings. Shoes are also my favorite accessories. I’ve been rocking a lot of sneakers lately because I walk a lot. The sneakers I am currently wearing are Reebok Classics off-white and green club. They are the comfiest sneakers I’ve ever worn. My favorite boots right now are from Shop-Peche called Melia. They are the perfect shade of green. They call them grey but they look more green to me in person.
Accessories play a huge role in my outfits. My looks don’t feel complete without them.
On Embracing Individuality
I feel my most beautiful when I am confident in my own skin. This is always a hard one to figure out because some days can be harder than others. But I take it one day at a time. Over the years I’ve learned to try and not compare myself with others. We are all unique and are beautiful in our own ways. I was taught that beauty comes from within. I know that sounds like a cliche but it really is true. You are only as beautiful as your heart is. Being a kind and thoughtful human being makes you the most beautiful.
On Expressing Yourself with Style
Don’t be afraid to be different and wear what makes you feel happy. I think life is hard enough so why not let your outfits bring you joy throughout your day. I also think outfits can be great starters for having conversations with people. You will attract your kind of people with your looks. It really is so cool to meet new friends through your sense of style. I hope you all feel brave enough to be truly authentic in who you are. Being brave in your looks is where you find your true style. I manifest only good things for you!
