Dior’s film for the Spring-Summer 2021 collection is about a journey of self-discovery, revealed through the symbolic images of tarot. It begins with the film’s protagonist asking a question; “Who am I?”, before drawing the card of the High Priestess and embarking on a surreal journey to her self-discovery. The High Priestess card represents intuition, the divine feminine, and the subconscious mind; the ideal card to answer the protagonist’s question.
As she transcends reality and enters a spiritual plane, the protagonist finds herself clad in a gown on the grounds of an ancient palace; her dark hair and attire replaced by flowing rose gold locks and an ornate, whimsical gown. As she enters the mysterious castle she glimpses a figure down the hall–herself, but with boyish cropped hair and an impeccably tailored suit.
The two contrasting versions of the protagonist each explore the grounds, encountering figures from the Arcana, including The Fool, The High Priestess, The Empress, Death, and Justice, who present challenges, distractions, or guidance on her journey, all draped in the most beautiful looks from Dior. In the final scene, the two halves of the progagonist merge; she has found her answer, who she really is.
You can see the 15 minute film by Italian director, Matteo Garrone below. Watch until the end for additional looks inspired by the Major Arcana that were not featured in the film.
What do you think of the film? I love the gender fluidity and the concept of looking within to find answers about self-discovery. Let me know what you think in the comments. For more of blending high fashion with the occult, see your Spring 2021 fashion horoscope. Xo
